SMS make strong start to new season

If there was any doubt that a third consecutive Grand Final defeat would linger in the minds of the SMS squad, it was all but eradicated following a second powerful display in as many weeks. Last week saw SMS crush Situation FC with a stunning 12-2 victory, and this week saw SMS smash another twelve goals as they demolished a new look WHK team 12-5. The victory against WHK, even though it was by a slightly smaller margin than the previous week's result, was especially pleasing since it was the same WHK team that had defeated SMS 3-4 in October. The difference has been two fold, better defensive shape and clinical finishing. In Bobby, SMS have a striker in red hot form. Bagging seven goals last weeks against Situation FC, his eight goal haul this week demonstrated the desire to reach another Grand Final is stronger than ever. In addition, the excellent finishing form of Mandeep, Tim and Leo, who smashed in a couple of sensational efforts against WHK, has provided much needed support to the attacking department. Leo, unfortunate to miss out on a deserved hat-trick this week, has performed well as an all rounder, marshalling the defence with confidence and attacking with purpose. The two Tim's have also been in excellent form, Tim John, like Leo, moving well between defence and attack, whilst Tim Haywood seems to be at peak fitness and has been a revelation in goal. Add to this the carefree, fearless displays by Luke Pelchen (unburdened of exam stress!) and the skillful performances of Toby Ford and, once again, SMS are showing that they are in first gear and focussed on dealing with what they see as unfinished business.

As always, tougher challenges lie in wait, and the unpredictability of the league grading could yet deal SMS a dud hand...but one thing is certain, this SMS side still has the fight, and they seem to keep coming back stronger each time.
